The people wanted a king who would make them like all the other nations, go to battle for them, and lead them. Saul succeeds in exactly one of those things. Instead of trusting in the LORD, Saul fears man in each of the stories of his reign. The result of Saul’s misplaced fear is seeing the future kingdom removed from Saul’s line in the very first story of his reign.
